I will start by saying I’m kind of obsessed with this smoothie (Jake, too). We’ve literally had it every day since the first time we made it because we both love it so much! It’s perfect for an after workout pick-me-up. And I have seen a noticeable difference in my skin since I started drinking it daily.
With my new job, school, the puppy and planning our wedding, my stress levels have been pretty high lately. When I get stressed, I break out. Breaking out also stresses me out. It’s a vicious cycle!
Since we’re getting married in 8 short months, I’d really like my skin to cooperate (it never has before, but I’d love for it to start!). From everything I’ve read, you’re supposed to start your skin care regimen at least 6 months before your wedding, if not sooner. Same with your workout routine.
One of my favorite Bloggers is also getting married this year, and she shared this recipe for her favorite smoothie that is full of great things for your skin. She has glowing skin, so I had to try it out. I adapted it slightly to make it my own.
I was pretty iffy about “green smoothies” because they look like they’ll taste like grass. But this one was so full of wonderful things, I had to give it a try. And everything in this smoothie has something in it that’s good for your skin. Also, it tastes amazing.
Here’s the breakdown of what’s inside:
Coconut water: Coconut water is very nutritious and hydrating, even more so than water. Hydration is very important to keep your skin looking great. It’s also full of vitamin C, which we all know is great for us and helps us stay healthy.
Banana: Bananas are probably best known for their potassium content, but they’re also full of vitamins C and E which all help to promote clear, glowing skin. They’re very moisturizing and can help revitalize dry skin, which is great in this winter weather!
Mangos & Carrots: Both of these are packed with something called carotenoids, which are great for your skin. It’s what gives them their vibrant color! Your body converts the pigments into Vitamin A, a.k.a Retinol! Retinol is in every wonderful miracle cream you put on your face. Carotenoids improve your coloring and even have some anti-aging effects.
Avocado: Avocados are full of healthy fats that make it easier to digest other things in your diet. They also have carotenoids in them and are full of antioxidants. They’re full of vitamin C and E, which both improve your skins elasticity.
Pineapple: Pineapple contains a lot of vitamin C and antioxidants that are extremely beneficial for both treatment and prevention of acne, fine lines, sun damage, etc. Bromelain is a naturally occurring enzyme that improves skin elasticity by helping your body synthesize collagen.
Peaches: Another fruit packed with vitamin C, peaches are known to help fight dark circles under your eyes and are a common ingredient in anti-aging face masks. This is because it’s known to tighten your skin and help you look less tired.
Spinach & Kale: Both of these are great for so much more than just your skin! They’re both considered “super foods”, exceptionally rich in omega-3s which are good for your heart. They also have an anti-inflammatory property which is great for your skin. They’re both packed with antioxidants and help detox your body!
Ok, here we go…
-2 cups coconut water (1 pint of Vita Coco)
-1/2 avocado (I use 5 pieces of frozen avocado as they’re easier!)
-5-6 baby carrots (or 1 medium carrot)
-1 cup frozen pineapple
-1 cup mango
-1 cup peaches
-1 banana (the more ripe the better!)
-1 handful spinach
-1 handful kale (use less if you don’t like the taste of kale – it can be really strong!)
-Ice cubes as needed. I use 2 handfuls
We were so happy with this smoothie, we’ve had it every day for the last 2 weeks. The recipe is enough for 2 servings, which is great for us, but you can easily cut it in half to make less. Add some protein powder if you plan to use it for meal replacement, but I would say one serving is perfect for a snack!
